Winter has arrived in the Southern Hemisphere, marking the eagerly awaited opening of the ski season across Australia and New Zealand. As we prepare to dive into the snowy adventures, we’re thrilled to provide comprehensive updates on the conditions at the region’s key ski resorts.

In Australia, our coverage includes Mount Buller, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Perisher, and Thredbo. Across the Tasman Sea, in New Zealand, we’re keeping a close eye on conditions at The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Cardrona, Treble Cone, and Mount Hutt.

Australia

Mount Buller

Mount Buller has been busy setting off new snow guns and has seen some early snowfalls, creating a promising start to the season. Despite limited natural snow, the resort has made significant amounts of manmade snow, particularly on Bourke St, ensuring some early-season skiing and snowboarding. However coverage remains limited, and more natural snowfall is needed to open additional runs. Skiing and snowboarding is available on Bourke St, with Gliders Mini Park also ready for some rails. Falls Creek

Falls Creek has been experiencing consistent cold temperatures, allowing for excellent snow-making conditions. The average snow depth is 18cm, with no new snowfall in the last 24 hours. Snow chains must be carried. The snow guns have been working through the night, and it is currently around -3°C on the upper mountain, so be sure to dress warmly if you are heading out. Mount Hotham

While the weather has been variable, with temperatures mostly below freezing, the consistent snowfall has enhanced the overall snow depth and skiing quality. Thredbo

Thredbo has opened with limited skiing and snowboarding due to thin snow cover. Snowmaking efforts have been substantial, with 146 snowguns operating for over 12 hours last night, helping to create a solid base. The new alpine coaster ride is an exciting addition to the resort this season. The team remains optimistic about the season and continues to work on improving snow conditions. See snow cams below:

Perisher

Perisher has opened with limited terrain due to thin snow cover. However, extensive snowmaking efforts (with 160 guns!) have significantly improved conditions. The Front Valley area boasts a solid cover of fresh snow, providing excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Additionally, the Front Valley Terrain Park has been rebuilt with 6 features, including rails and boxes, catering to both beginners and seasoned riders alike. See the snow cams below:

The Remarkables

The Remarkables are gearing up for their season opening on June 15th. Currently, snow coverage is limited, but ongoing snowmaking efforts and expected natural snowfall are anticipated to improve conditions. Staff training and preparations are in full swing to ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to the season. It is expected in the learners area, the Tahi, Rua & Shorty conveyors to open. Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak is gearing up for its opening on June 15th, despite some recent snowmelt. The forecast is looking promising, with snowfall expected in the coming days, which should significantly enhance the base and improve conditions for skiing and snowboarding. For those driving, 2WD vehicles are advised to chain up from Chain Bay 4 for the top section of the road. Use Car Park 1 to access the mountain and soak in the stunning views. Today, we’re in for a beautiful fine day with light winds. Start your morning with a smooth corduroy run that will quickly soften into delightful slushy spring snow. Cardrona

Cardrona has maintained its snow base amidst cold temperatures, with ongoing efforts to enhance coverage, though conditions remain patchy. The forecast looks promising with more snow expected in the coming days, which should bolster conditions leading up to our anticipated opening on June 15th. Tomorrow, McD’s and the Carpets will kick off operations at 8:30 am, accompanied by the Base and Mezz Cafe opening their doors. Overnight a great foundation over the snowpack has been set up, ensuring optimal conditions. While the groomers are currently in excellent shape, they will gradually soften throughout the morning as spring conditions set in later in the day.
