Kalan’s Weekly Weather 2024 - Week 1

Winter is finally here! And with the opening of the season tomorrow in Australia, we’re getting super excited to see how conditions pan out in the Southern Hemisphere! This year we will be covering the conditions in Australia and New Zealand’s main ski resorts to help you plan ahead and get on board!

We will be covering conditions at Perisher, Thredbo, Mount Buller, Falls Creek, and Hotham in Australia, and in New Zealand we will provide updates for Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona, Treble Cone and Mt Hutt! We will aim to publish the blog posts on Thursday or Friday each week so you have all the conditions if you plan on taking a trip up the mountains on the weekend! Here’s our first recap of how things have been going over the past week, and what the forecast is looking like for the weekend.

Australia

Mount Buller

The team up at the stunning Mount Buller resort has started setting up brand new snow guns in preparation for the upcoming season! On Monday, Mount Buller received a fresh dusting of snow and conditions below  0 degrees! After making heaps of snow over the past couple of weeks, the groomers have come out to smooth the mountains of manmade snow down onto the Bourke Street run to ensure the mountain maintains its Ski Guarantee. Hopefully, this is topped up with some fresh natural snow to kick start the season and establish good bases of snow on the other runs.

Mount Buller will be open for the weekend. At the moment it looks like the snow coverage is limited to Bourke Street and just next to the Northside Lift where a terrain park has been set up. Overall, it is an exciting sight for hopefully a season with plenty of snow coverage for Mount Buller. Heading to Mount Buller for some snowboarding or skiing? Look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Here’s the weather forecast for the upcoming long weekend to help you plan your trip.

Falls Creek

Like Mount Buller, Falls Creek has been blessed with a dusting of snow during the start of the week, which has kicked off some of their snow guns, however, warmer conditions have led to the mountain having to delay its opening for this long weekend. Delaying the start of the season is devastating not only to Falls Creek businesses and residents but also to visitors who had made plans. Nonetheless, the forecast looks promising, hopefully giving Falls Creek a kick-start to the season. Look at the webcams below for updates on current conditions and snow coverage.

Mount Hotham

Mount Hotham have found themselves in a similar situation to Falls Creek, with not enough snow to have lifts up and running the opening of the season will also be delayed at Mount Hotham. However, the mountain has promised fireworks and open stores for anyone heading up the mountain regardless of the conditions. Mother Nature is yet to rule in favour of our beautiful Victorian mountain but the forecasts are looking promising for Mount Hotham. Have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Let’s have a look at what Mount Hotham has to look forward to over the next few days.

Thredbo

Thredbo is opening this weekend! After some dusting of snow over the week so far, accompanied by a contribution from the snowmakers, there will be limited skiing and snowboarding due to the lack of snow cover however enough to justify opening the season this weekend. And with lower temperatures overnight, hopefully, the conditions will be adequate for snowmaking up at Thredbo. Even though the skiing and snowboarding is limited, the alpine coaster ride is opening this weekend also which is the first ever in the southern hemisphere, something fun for all members of the family to try. All the best to the hardworking team at Thredbo, we will be doing all the snow dances for you over the next week. Have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Let’s take a look at the weather over the next few days.

Perisher

Like Mount Buller and Thredbo, Perisher will continue as planned and be opening this long weekend. However, skiing and snowboarding will be very limited to a small amount of terrain. Nonetheless, the forecast is looking promising for snowmaking conditions to not only fill out the currently operating runs but also to get some more lifts moving towards the end of next week. Perisher have plenty of other exciting activities to kick off the start of the season. Overall it’s a disappointing start for the Australian Alpine resorts. Our best advice would be to avoid the mountains for this weekend if you are planning to go for a day trip. Due to such limited snow and poor conditions, you may find yourself better off going up when there is more consistent snowfall and appropriate conditions for snowmaking to maintain reliable terrain. For now, feel free to have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Now let’s take a look at the weather for the next few days up at Perisher.

New Zealand

The Remarkables

Although the Remarkables Ski Resort is still yet to open, there is still a significantly decreased amount of snow for the opening of the season at this current time. The Remarkables have been training their staff and preparing for their season-opening on the 15th of June! However, the mountain is looking better than its neighbor, Coronet Peak. There are high hopes that they will receive greater snow over the next week to enable substantial accessibility to the mountain and allow snowboarders and skiers to shred. We have our fingers crossed that the Remarkables have enough snow by their season opening! Have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Coronet Peak

Sadly, Mother Nature’s not ruling in favor of Coronet Peak at this current time. After a significant dusting of snow over the past couple of weeks, the snow has melted significantly and the mountain is looking less and less like a winter wonderland at this current point in time. However, they still have a week till their planned season opening on the 15th of June. Snow is on the forecast, and their staff are almost prepped and ready to go! Cardrona

How beautiful is Cardrona? Low temperatures have allowed Cardrona to maintain the snow that they have already received. However, the mountain is still very patchy and in need of contribution from the snow guns as well as Mother Nature. Having received just 5cm of snow in the last 24 hours, there is more on the forecast for the upcoming week which will hopefully give Cardrona the snow they need by June 15th. Have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Treble Cone

The stunning Treble Cone still has quite a while till their season opening on the 22nd of June. We are hoping that Treble Cone gets a better start to the season than last year, where it took quite a while for conditions to improve until later into the season. For now, the conditions are looking very bare, however snow is on the forecast. Have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Now let’s take a look at the weather for the next few days up at Treble Cone.

Mt Hutt

Mount Hutt is looking spectacular! They will be opening on the 14th of June, so only a few days away now. They have a substantial base, patchy in some areas but a great way to start the season, looking much better off than some of the other resorts at this time. The weather has been a bit warm, and looking to stay that way over the weekend. However, hopefully, as we get further into the winter, the area will cool down enough for Mt Hutt to maintain their snow. If you’re heading up to Mt Hutt next week, we are feeling very jealous here at the Alpine Anthology. Have the best time! Have a look at the webcams below for an update on current conditions and snow coverage.

Now let’s take a look at the weather for the next few days up at Mt Hutt.
